Harry’s Anchorage (The Anchorage Club) was purchased in 1972 and transformed into The Anchorage Christian Camp. The public skating rink, one of several mostly open air rinks in the county, closed with the sale and operated only for private reservations—church groups, scout groups, birthday parties, etc.—until 1976 when the rink re-opened to public use on Saturday mornings from 9-12. In 1977 the public use changed from Saturday mornings to Saturday nights (Friday and Saturday nights during the winter months). It has remained in continuous operation except for June of 1988 thru January of 1989 when the old rink was demolished and the current rink constructed, and for a few years in the mid-2000’s for insurance purposes.
Since opening in 1976 the rink at The Anchorage Camp has been a treasured part of Lake Waccamaw history. For over 50 years, Saturday night skate nights have brought families, friends, and the community together—creating memories that span generations. Today, it’s not uncommon to see grandparents who once skated here as children now bringing their grandchildren to enjoy the same experience.
Skate nights have always included a stop at the snack bar, and in recent years we’ve added even more to enjoy, including our coffee shop and camp store. Guests can also take part in axe throwing, rock wall climbing , and in 2026 we’re excited to introduce our completed 19-hole Gator Golf course as another fun addition to the evening.
While the activities and amenities have grown, the heart of skate night has remained the same. Each Saturday, we set aside a few intentional moments to share the gospel with everyone in attendance—making skate night not just a fun tradition, but a meaningful one that continues to point families to Christ.
